Are Strong Financial Prospects The Force That Is Driving The Momentum In Qorvo, Inc.’s NASDAQ:QRVO) Stock?

Qorvo’s (NASDAQ:QRVO) stock is up by a considerable 13% over the past month. Since the market usually pays for a company’s long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company’s key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. In this article, we decided to focus on Qorvo’s ROE.

Return on equity or ROE is a key measure used to assess how efficiently a company’s management is utilizing the company’s capital. Put another way, it reveals the company’s success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

Our analysis indicates that QRVO is potentially undervalued!

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders’ Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Qorvo is:

16% = US$686m ÷ US$4.3b (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2022).

The ‘return’ refers to a company’s earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders’ capital it has, the company made $0.16 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or “retain”, we are then able to evaluate a company’s future ability to generate profits. Generally speaking, other things being equal, firms with a high return on equity and profit retention, have a higher growth rate than firms that do not share these attributes.

A Side By Side comparison of Qorvo’s Earnings Growth And 16% ROE

At first glance, Qorvo seems to have a decent ROE. Further, the company’s ROE is similar to the industry average of 19%. Consequently, this likely laid the ground for the impressive net income growth of 54% seen over the past five years by Qorvo. We believe that there might also be other aspects that are positively influencing the company’s earnings growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently.

Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Qorvo’s growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 27% in the same period, which is great to see.
