Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has shared a new magazine cover image featuring Black Adam and the members of the Justice Society of America. A DC film project that has been years in the making, the former WWE wrestler turned Hollywood superstar has been circling the role of Black Adam in a Shazam! feature film since 2007. Development on the project, however, stalled in 2009 and was resurrected again in 2014 when Warner Bros. began announcing plans for their DC Extended Universe. It was also later decided to split the intended Shazam! project into two films, allowing Johnson to headline his own feature film as the titular anti-hero, Black Adam.
In 2020, Johnson appeared at the inaugural DC FanDome streaming event to hype the film and revealed that it would also include the Justice Society of America (JSA), a superhero team that was first created by Sheldon Mayer and Gardner Fox in the 1940s. The iteration of the team destined to join Johnson on screen would ultimately consist of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo). Initially, there were plans to also include Hawkgirl in the JSA’s line-up, but for unknown complex reasons, her character was unable to appear and was instead replaced by Cyclone.
Most recently, Johnson and his co-stars have appeared on the cover of Total Film magazine, which Johnson himself has retweeted for his fans to enjoy. Featuring the actor’s imposing Black Adam front and center, he is flanked on either side by the members of the JSA. Check out Johnson’s post below:
A lot of importance is being placed on the release of Black Adam and what it will mean for the DCEU’s future. Johnson has repeatedly promised his entrance into the franchise will forever change “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe,” and with so many other DC properties currently either canceled or in peril, it is hoped this new film will help steer the franchise onto a more secure footing. While questions are being raised about the future of DC’s heavy hitters such as Henry Cavill’s Superman, Johnson seems more than willing to have his character appear as a central figure in the franchise going forward.
Between the concerns raised by Ezra Miller’s ongoing erratic behavior and reports that Cavill is disinterested in any DCEU return, the future of DC’s other superteam, the Justice League, is far from bright. As such, perhaps the JSA itself could fill the gap and go on to play a much larger role in the DC universe once Black Adam has been released. Certainly, Hodges’ Hawkman and Brosnan’s Doctor Fate have a great deal of potential to appear in other projects following the film’s release. Meanwhile, Black Adam is currently slated to hit theaters on October 21.
