Since early 2021, the town and the Lyndeborough Historical Society have been working with representatives of the United Church of Lyndeborough on a deal to buy the historic church, and on Aug. 2, the society entered into a purchase-and-sale agreement for the building, located at 1139 Center Road.
Under the agreement, the Lyndeborough Historical Society has two years to raise enough money to purchase the building for $156,000. According to society secretary Jessie Salisbury, the society has raised approximately $50,000 of its $78,000 goal from various fundraising efforts, including two yard sales last spring. The society is hosting another yard sale Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 am to 2 pm at the former town barn in Lyndeborough Center, next to Town Hall.
Salisbury said a donation-based yard sale is an easy and sufficient way for the society to reach its end goal.
“We did very well with the first two [yard sales] we had… so we wanted to do it again,” said Salisbury.
Once the $78,000 goal is met, the society plans to apply for a matching grant from the state Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHiP) next spring to cover the remaining $78,000 needed to purchase the church.
The church, built in 1837, is part of the town’s Historic District, which is part of the National Register of Historic Places. Currently, the church is not winterized and only used during the summer months, and Salisbury said the goal is to turn it into a new community center for seasonal events.
“We want to transfer it to town ownership for community events,” said Salisbury. “It hosts more people than any other building in town. Because of the acoustics, we would be interested in hosting musical events, weddings or anything else the community wants to use it for.”
People can bring donations for the yard sale to the town barn Friday, Sept. 30; Saturday, Oct. 1; and Friday, Oct. 7, between 10 am and 2 pm People should not bring clothing or books, and instead give them to JA Tarbell Library. Volunteers to help with the sale are welcome.
