Senior Environmental Designer – The Fifth Estate

Atelier Ten are searching for an experienced, enthusiastic Senior Environmental Designer to join our supportive team in Sydney. Join us for a role that provides true job satisfaction, as you use your expertise to imagine and deliver sustainable, resilient buildings and places.

As a project leader, you will be responsible for developing sustainability visions, identifying and recommending appropriate ESD initiatives, integrating them into the master plans and building designs, and guiding them through benchmarking programs like Green Star, NABERS, and WELL Building. You will also undertake complex, challenging simulation work; develop new tools and working methodologies; provide peer review and QA support, and mentor junior staff.

This includes:

  • Manage large and complex sustainable building and master planning projects, with support from Associates and Directors
  • Generate enthusiasm for project sustainability ambitions with clients and the project design team
  • Lead technical environmental studies including daylight, energy, and thermal comfort analysis, with support from international practice leaders
  • Your work will inform building design teams on strategies for energy conservation, carbon emissions reductions, net zero buildings, thermal comfort, and more.
  • Independently scope and resource analysis tasks, assist with business development and ensuring reliable delivery within budget
  • Guide junior staff in technical tasks and consulting
  • Contribute knowledge and develop local expertise in technical design practices
  • Benchmark against green building certification programs like Green Star, WELL, NABERS and others
  • Create conceptual diagrams and illustrations
  • Represent Atelier Ten and in professional organizations

  • Bachelor (or higher) degree qualified in a field related to environmental or sustainable building design, architecture, urban design, planning, or engineering.
  • 6+ years’ experience in ESD consulting
  • 6+ years’ total professional experience in ESD, including:
  • 4+ years’ experience in an environmental design or sustainable built environment consulting role, including whole building simulation
  • 2+ years’ project management experience, including managing client relations
  • Green Star Accredited Professional
  • Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Appropriate work visa status.

  • Additional planning, design, or property industry experience beyond 3+ years ESD work.
  • Experience conducting Life Cycle Assessments or embodied carbon calculations.
  • Green Star AP and Green Star project experience.
  • Project management experience from inception to completion, including collaboration across design teams and contractors.
  • Experience writing project proposals and sales.
  • Client relationships that may lead to new project opportunities.
