Athletes from 170 communities across BC will receive a $2,000 credit towards studies at the university.

UNBC will offer a $2,000 tuition credit to the athletes coming to Prince George next week to participate in the BC Summer Games.

UNBC president Geoff Payne and the games host committee announced the move on Friday morning.

“This is an exciting ‘first’ for the Games,” host society president Renee McCloskey said in a statement issued on Friday. “We are so grateful for the support from UNBC and the opportunity to showcase the beautiful campus in Prince George as part of our Games. It would be wonderful to see these young athletes have their experience at these Games spark their post-secondary journey.”

The games, which run from July 21 to July 24, are expected to draw 2,300 young athletes from 170 communities across the province.

Twenty-nine athletes in nine sports from the North Peace will be competing in this year’s Summer Games.

“We know the athletes and their families will have an incredible experience during the 2022 BC Summer Games and we hope this incentive will encourage them to choose UNBC when they’re ready to begin their post-secondary education,” Payne said in a statement issued it’s Friday. “Elite athletes must work to balance their rigorous training schedules with academics and we hope this financial support will further empower them as they pursue their studies.”

Participating athletes will be eligible for a $1,000 credit for their first two semesters at UNBC. To receive the credit, athletes must fill out an online prospective student profile by Aug. 31 and apply for admission for a semester starting in September 2025 or earlier.

UNBC has also provided use of the Charles Jago Northern Sport Center for an evening social event for athletes, use of meeting room space and a cash donation. Athletes can also sign up for a campus tour while they are in Prince George.
